It’s that time of year… colds, fevers, sniffles, hacking, flu, phlegm, etcetera. You could always make a hot toddy for your loved one. But why not impress them a little more with an ancient Chinese elixir instead? Not only will they find you loving and caring, they’ll also come to see that you have the Far East wisdom of a 95-year-old Chinese man or lady.

Again, this potion comes courtesy of my uncle Sheegoo, who swears by it as a way to eliminate the worst fevers. You can also drink it just to soothe a sore throat, but in order for it to work on a fever, you have to drink the hot ginger tea, then wrap yourself up in heavy blankets until you sweat feverishly from the heat and your sheets are soaked. This ordeal won’t be fun or easy by any means, but apparently you wake up practically cured.

So. Curious? I bet you can’t wait to get a fever just so you can try it out…or better yet a loved one can get the fever and you can test it out on them hehehe. The recipe is easy–a pot of boiling water and just a few ingredients, some of which are optional.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1-2 large pieces of ginger
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 lemon (optional)
  • honey to taste (optional as a substitute for sugar, or in addition to it)
    • HOW TO MAKE THE GINGER AND BROWN SUGAR FEVER TONIC
      1. Boil the water in a pot
      2. Turn to Med High heat, and add all ingredients
      3. Continue boiling the mixture on Med High heat for 15-20 minutes
      4. Taste and add more sugar as desired.
      5. Et voila!

The tonic should turn a brownish color from the sugar. And it should have a very strong medicinal, herbal taste. The smell gives you the sensation of clearing your sinuses, the way that menthol or eucalyptus does.

    Happy sipping and sweating!
