Thank you – “Jin Doh Xia”!
(For translation, see below!)
So… our fundraising deadline of Sept. 1 has finally arrived and we’re still dumbfounded by the response for our little home video – 108,000+ hits! From what we know, we were able to encourage at least $6,065 in donations for the relief efforts, which also exceeded our
humble expectations. While no amount of money will ever reverse the devastating loss of loved ones and homes, we hope that any little bit can help survivors to stand strong and recover quickly. Thanks so much to everyone, friends, families and strangers across the Pacific who bothered to share this with others and to pledge donations.
Many of you said you were moved to tears by the song. We were in turn touched by the unexpected outpouring of warmth, kindness and support, especially for a pair of 2nd generation Taiwanese Americans.
It made us feel like little long-lost grandchildren being welcomed back by their loving “ah-gohng and ah-ma” (grandparents) with open arms and open heart. Reading the hundreds of sweet comments gave us a happy sense of pride and belonging in our hearts. The response was also a testament to the strength of Taiwanese pride and identity. Needless to say, it was emotional and a bit overwhelming. You make us proud to be Taiwanese
For those who do not understand the lyrics of “Ai Bianh,” here is a simple translation. We chose this song because it reflects the Taiwanese spirit, which is resilient in the face of challenges, as well as upbeat and hardworking. The message must resonate powerfully with many Taiwanese now, who may feel defeated and down after all the suffering caused by the storm.
There is no need to complain when you feel demoralized/
No need to be scared in the face of abjection/
Don’t ever lose hope and grow drunk and numb/
Lest you become a scarecrow – a body without a soul./
Life, like the ocean tide, has its highs and its lows/
In good times and in bad, you must pick yourself up and carry on/
Success is 3 parts heaven’s will, and 7 parts hard work/
So you must work hard to succeed!
Because so many people seemed to enjoy 愛拼才會贏, we may just make a recording of our own Taiwanese-American folk rendition in the near future! Along with any other Taiwanese songs we know.
So do visit us again!
love,
emily + susan (許以純 + 許以真)

mousybabe raises $ for Taiwan typhoon victims
Susan and i made a little lo-fi, home music video tonight to help raise money for the victims of Taiwan’s Typhoon Morakot. It’s a performance of a Taiwanese song called “Ai-Biahnh Jia-eh Eianh.”
We’re personally making a donation of .25 cents for every hit/view we get on this YouTube video between now and September 1, 2009 — with a goal of 500 hits ($125).
Please help us by watching the video and sending it around to your friends to help us reach our goal. Feel free to make your own pledge/donation too. Pledges can be as low as a penny per hit (=$5 at 500 hits/views) — any little bit helps. If you do so, please let us know your pledge (mousybabe@gmail.com). If we get enough responses, we’ll post a list of anonymous pledges (here on mousybabe) to celebrate the good will.
We’re capping total hits at 500, so no worries about going broke.
Also, pledges are not binding, just the good old-fashioned honor system! You can send your tax-deductible donation to the Taiwanese Association of America (see below), Tzui Chi Foundation (accepts PayPal donations!), or any other suggested organizations listed at TaiwaneseAmerican.org.

This will join our Exit Clov efforts to help survivors of the typhoon. Exit Clov is donating $1 per CD/Tshirt sold through September 1.
Moz is turning 50!
The NYC-based Music Slut is paying homage to Morrissey by releasing a tribute album in honor of the Brit’s 50th birthday. The compilation includes covers of Morrissey and Smiths songs performed by 19 of the Slut’s favoritest bands, known as the Slutstars! Exit Clov is on that roster, it’s a rare occasion where we can proclaim, we’re proud to be sluts, woohoo.
The compilation, endearingly titled, “TMS Hearts Moz,” (cover art above), will be revealed one by one on TheMusicSlut.com — every week day @ 4pm (east coast time) between May 4 and May 24. A little bird tells us, our assigned release date will be Friday, May 8! So stay tuned. Our song choice will remain undisclosed for surprise purposes, so do mosey over to the site to hear it. We arranged and tracked it piecemeal over the last few months in our temporary Clov bedroom studio.
The site lists all the participating bands, and we’re particularly excited about friends Deleted Scenes, and Free Blood (pictured to the right). Can’t wait for Moz fest. Thanks, Music Slut

if brightest young things is looking for a punky kid sister, i think she’s finally arrived.
The ladies who run this snazzy new DC music web site are the daughters of a musician whom suz and i have recorded violins for. We were alerted to its existence today after they published a very kind review of exit clov \m/ We were also secretly pleased to learn from the website that the author’s top 3 all-time artists include Damon Albarn.

(Historical footnote: In our high school days, suz and i took the Blur vs. Oasis class war to another level. She was a rabid Blur fan… and with time I guess I’ve come to see things through her eyes (at least on this one). If I could steal anyone’s musical career, it might have to be mr. albarn’s).
Now, novelty isn’t the easiest thing to inject into music web sites, but I think these guys pull it off with this nifty little page. If you’re around this weekend, check out a fundraising party they’re throwing at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Everyone’s invited.
I will be methodically evading the swine/ mexican/ north american/ H1N1 virus at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden on Saturday, but maybe suzi q will be around. Proceeds to benefit music programs for kids! yay…
Today is Record Store Day!
Find participating stores in your state and begin your record store crawl. We will be on the prowl in DC and NY, yay.

Speaking of records, I found an orphaned turntable near the dumpster outside our apartment buliding a couple weeks ago. Looked in pretty good shape, so I took it under my wing. I think Suz and Ryan might try to restore it to health with a trip to Best Buy. And speaking of orphaned goods, Sven last week found an Exilim Casio digital camera that was left behind in a taxi. 10.1 megapixels is pretty good right? The gods must be taking pity on us, after the beating we’ve taken from uncle sam last week.
yeehaw, just got tix…
…to radio city. think i’m most excited to see feist. hope the kronos quartet(!) turns up at the show.
Painting With the WhoToo Art Club
It’s the second day of our vacation here in Chicago, and we’re quickly turning into porky pigs from our mom’s food. But in between the munchies, we found time to visit an art studio where our parents’ artist friends were painting a mural backdrop for an upcoming play.
After some arm-twisting, the two of us found ourselves picking up smocks and paintbrushes!

The WhoToo Art Club is a collective of painters, sculptors, potters, photographers and other creators of visual art.
Definition. ‘collective’: /noun/ A leaderless resistance, characterized by attempts to share and exercise political and social power and to make decisions on a consensus-driven and egalitarian basis.
Our dad was honored to be one of 4 co-founders of the collective, which includes a handful of the most gracious and unrealistically selfless people who love art and love dedicating their free time to it. Funny enough, ‘WhoToo’ has a double meaning in Taiwanese. It refers to someone who’s spacey and airheaded, and also describes someone who’s artistically carefree…
Here’s 3 of them. So cute!

Dr. Wu (left, doing the Richard Nixon haha) is a doctor, prosthetician, sculptor and painter who’s made prosthetic limbs for victims of land mines and war. Mr. Lekki (center) is a brilliant painter and photographer who’s done billboards and who first requested to meet our dad after he took a liking to his disarming and childlike artwork. Dr. Wang (right) is a physicist, painter and master of Taoism and other philosophies. Mrs. Hwang, also a co-founder, was unfortunately not present for the mural session because she was in the middle of moving.
When we got there, they had spent the whole day finishing up the backdrop. Paint was everywhere.

Here’s a little glimpse of the painting when we first arrived. While Mr. Lekki prepares the canvas…

…we don an apron and a big bubbly astronaut-like suit, climb atop a table and put our marks on the painting!

Em in blue, and me in red. Luckily, the picture was supposed to be an abstract painting on a pretend wall, so there was no way we could really ruin it with our amateur strokes, phew.
Then Mama Hsu joins in on the fun!

Posing proudly for photos after making our meager contribution, hee.

Here are some more spectacular murals by the WhoToo’s:

DAY2: inamorati by e.l.m.s.
Alas, it’s Day 2 of recording and time to do the vocals. May starts the session off by tracking her verse.

In downtime, we doodle a bit on Eamonn’s studio instruments. I try my hand at brushes and a snare drum covered with a tshirt.

…May at the drum kit.

Suzi perches on a stool in the corner in her pom pom boots. ($10 from Taiwan!!)

Time to record the group choruses, yay… We pair off to sing in two mics – May and Susan sing the main line, Laura and I take the low end. Kinda tough to film while we’re singing, but ambitious little Suzi tries to do both. Wasn’t so successful though. Laura ended up in a fit of giggles:
Then Laura makes it a day by finishing her verse.

an historic moment has arrived…
i voted…! yeehaws for america. well, guess we’ll have to wait til tonight for that battle cry. but it wasn’t too unpleasant, merely a 10 minute wait.
mysterioso though, there was zero wait time to sit down and fill out a paper ballot, yet like 40 people chose to stand in line for the electronic booths. wtf… i filled in my bubbles on the paper ballot in 25 seconds and said, see ya’ll suckas, i’m blowing this joint. and i did.
